Thirty-one people were injured and seven hospitalized after a fire erupted inside Formula One team Williams' garage after team driver Pastor Maldonado won the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.
Catalonia's regional government said one person was airlifted to a Barcelona hospital with serious burn wounds, while the rest were being treated locally for smoke inhalation.
Williams confirmed a fuel leak caused the problem. The fire erupted soon after the team had taken the traditional victory photo in front of the garage. Williams team chief Frank Williams, a paraplegic, was rushed from his wheelchair as he was giving a speech. It was his team's first F1 win in eight years, and coincided with his 70th birthday celebrations.
Williams driver Bruno Senna's car was torched by the blaze, while Maldonado's car was alongside fellow podium finishers cars away from the garage.
Pole-sitter Maldonado held off Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in the 66-lap race at the 2.86-mile course by 3.1 seconds. It was the Venezuelan's first F1 win and Williams' 114th overall.
· Sebastian Saavedra's lap of 221.526 mph was the fastest of the week in practice for the Indianapolis 500. Rookies Bryan Clauson (221.173) and Josef Newgarden (221.158) were second and third in preparation for the May 27 race.

Roger Federer won the Madrid Open for the third time, rallying past Tomas Berdych 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 on the new blue clay court and overtaking Rafael Nadal for the No. 2 ranking. It was Federer's 74th title in 104 finals. Serena Williams routed top-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-3 in the women's final. Azarenka was so exasperated she smashed her racket to the ground. "I can still do better," Williams said after winning her 41st career title.
· Play at the Italian Open began with Juan Carlos Ferrero beating Kevin Anderson 6-4, 7-5. Women's play begins Monday on the red clay courts in Rome.

Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero scored during injury time to rally host Manchester City to a 3-2 win over lowly Queens Park Rangers and its first English league title since 1968. City finished ahead of Manchester United on goal difference. City appeared to have thrown the Premier League title away on the final day. It let 10-man QPR take the lead in the second half while United completed a 1-0 victory at Sunderland.
· Kenny Cooper scored in the 78th minute to lift New York (7-3-1) to a 3-2 MLS win over host Philadelphia (2-6-1). The Red Bulls moved into first in the Eastern Conference.

Olympian Ryan Lochte salvaged an otherwise underwhelming weekend by winning the 200-meter individual medley at the Charlotte (N.C.) Grand Prix. Lochte, who had failed to earn a medal in his other five swimming events, finished in a meet-record 1 minute, 57.63 seconds. In the women's 100 freestyle, Lia Neal edged Jessica Hardy (Cal) by one one-hundredth of a second, finishing in 54.35. Natalie Coughlin (Cal) was third at 54.59. Other winners included Stanford's Chad La Tourette (men's 1,500 freestyle) and Cal's Caitlin Leverenz (women's 200 IM).
· American Christopher Colwill won the 3-meter springboard at the USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
· All 10 of the Seattle Seahawks' draft picks are signed, including fourth-round pick Robert Turbin, a running back from Utah State and Irvington High-Fremont.
· Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens opened the scoring, and the United States cruised to a 5-0 victory over defending champion Finland at the world hockey championships in Helsinki. Canada tops Group A with 16 points, followed the U.S. (13) and Finland (12). If Finland defeats Kazakhstan on Monday, it will again face the U.S. team in Thursday's quarterfinal.

· Shelly Olds emerged from a group sprint to win a World Cup cycling event in China, bolstering her case for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
· Paul Dee, the University of Miami's athletic director from 1993-2008, died, school officials said. He was 65. Dee had recently been hospitalized for cancer treatment.
